Personal Finance Education

Personal Finance Education
Personal finance education is intertwined in our everyday lives whether we know it or not, like it or not, believe it or not. The more we know about managing our personal finances the better decisions we can make.

Unfortunately the high schools no longer teach students how to manage their personal finances. However, there is an organization that has page after page on their website covering this very topic.

Believe it or not, it is the Federal Reserve System. The Fed as it is informally called is the nation’s central banking system. This organization has thousands of web pages so I surfed the pages to help consumers take advantage of the free advice they post.

One of their pages states:

A personal finance education resource for schools, nonprofit community organizations, financial services providers and consumers to help young people, adult consumers, families and others develop a plan for building personal wealth. Presents an overview of personal wealth-building strategies that includes setting financial goals, budgeting, saving and investing, managing debt, and understanding credit reports and credit scores.

If you go to: http://www.dallasfed.org/ca/wealth/index.cfm you will be at that very page and will be able to take advantage of everything they offer. It is an excellent free resource.

If you go to: http://www.federalreserveeducation.org/pfed/indextext.cfm#Home Ownership & Mortgages you will find these topics covered in depth:

  • Consumer Banking
  • Consumer Protection
  • Economics
  • Home Ownership & Mortgages
  • Interest Rates
  • Loans & Credit
  • General Information
  • Non-Fed Web Sites

This is what the Chairman of the Federal System has to say about financial education:

“In today’s complex financial markets, financial education is central to helping consumers make better decisions for themselves and their families.”

- Ben S. Bernanke

Hopefully the above pages will be a valuable resource for your personal finance education. The amount of information is well worth the time it will take you to read everything they present.
